The East Akron YMCA was built in 1950 and has been the home to many different YMCA programs, most notably the YMCA Phoenix Programs, which have made this facility a home since 1991. The facility is located on the campus of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, a pioneer and world leader in tire manufacturing.

The Phoenix school is a fully accredited behavior modification school designed to serve as a coeducational alternative for adolescents ages 12-18 who are involved with the court system and/or have academic or behavioral problems. All credits earned while attending Phoenix will transfer to the student’s home school.

The East Akron Phoenix School, which has been in existence since 1972, and has been chartered since 1988, is the only special needs school of its kind in the State of Ohio. It is funded by The Summit County Juvenile Court and by various local school districts, including Akron Public Schools. The program accepts referrals from juvenile court and from local school districts of students in the primary and secondary grades.

Other programs sponsored by the East Akron YMCA include the Phoenix Summer Character Camps, which have been funded by AMHA, and the Black Achievers Program, which is funded by various corporate sponsors, including The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, National City Bank and the Alpha Foundation.
